Audemars Piguet Royal Oak or Patek Philippe Nautilus? These two watches are the ultimate icons of the luxury steel sports watch. They share the same designer, yet each has its own character. Here are the differences that will help you choose.
A shared origin: Gérald Genta
Both watches were designed by Gérald Genta, one of the most influential watch designers of the 20th century. The Royal Oak was launched by Audemars Piguet in 1972, and at the time it was the first luxury steel watch priced like a gold watch. The Nautilus followed in 1976 at Patek Philippe, with a shape inspired by ships' portholes.
Design
Royal Oak
An octagonal bezel secured by eight visible hexagonal screws, a guilloché dial with a Tapisserie pattern and an integrated bracelet with sharp edges. The style is architectural and highly geometric.
Nautilus
A bezel with softened angles, flanked by two side ears, a horizontally embossed dial and a slimmer bracelet. The style is more fluid and more discreet on the wrist.
On the wrist
The Royal Oak has a strong presence, with crisp edges that catch the light. The Nautilus is generally seen as slimmer and more elegant, and it slips more easily under a shirt cuff. The best approach is still to try both.

Availability and value
Both models are in high demand and difficult to obtain new from official boutiques. On the pre-owned market, they are available immediately, often above their list price for the most sought-after references. Their value depends on the reference, condition, year and whether they come with box and papers.
So, which one should you choose?
Choose the Royal Oak if you love a bold, architectural design, and the Nautilus if you prefer a more fluid and understated elegance. Either way, a pre-owned purchase should always involve rigorous authentication.
